Weather Vanes & Wind Sculptures - Handcrafted

Forkometry’s Weather Vanes are handcrafted in Tasmania, by Jeremy Lye.

Featuring ‘Converted’ Silverware, Cutlery, Flatware & discarded objects. Jeremy’s Weather Vanes combine ingenuity, wit & talented design.

Weather Vane History

On their lofty perches weather vanes defy sun & storms and, like real friends, always tell the truth. We may not like the turn of the wind but the weather vane foretells the future in no uncertain terms.

The Greeks are supposed to have invented the weather vane as part of their investigations into natural phenomena. To them, and later on to the Romans, the winds had personalities and vanes were oracles portending a fruitful harvest or foul miasma.

Medieval Europe used the weather vane (wind vane or weather cock) on churches, castles, and public buildings in and around the towns then growing into cities. Caravels, carracks, galleons, and Viking long ships all had vanes which influenced vane design ashore.

It is from these ancient designs & heritage we see the folk-art and manufactured vanes of today.

Jeremy’s Weather Vane Designs

Reviving the unique, antiquity of weather vanes from another place & time, Jeremy aims to complete his weather vane sculptures in a medium of ‘Converted’ materials. Each design is unique through the components of silverware, thoughtfully chosen to create each individual design.

Limited to the capacity of 2 hands and one craftsman, these sought after designs are exclusive to Forkometry.

The Oracle Weather Vane

The Oracle Weather Vane by Jeremy Lye

Handcrafted by Jeremy Lye - Forkometrist

Created in 2007, this weather vane masterpiece was handcrafted by Jeremy Lye on the beautiful Tasman Peninsula - Tasmania - Australia.

Inspired by the rapid coastal wind speeds of this exposed location, Jeremy took to the workshop to harness this intense energy through creativity & sculpture.

Working already in a medium consisting of silverware, flatware & cutlery, his challenge was to complete the proposed kinetic sculpture with ‘converted’ objects pertaining to this medium.

The Result

A functional weather vane, with 2 tiers of wind speed depiction & and a vane forged from silver cutlery.

No where will you see another like it. Designed to handle intense wind speeds, each weather vane is unique to the makers desire.

Stay tuned for new weather vane sculptures.
